Roco V Glanmire C.C. County Semi Final

A strong start from Roco in which they had a lot of the play didn’t translate to the scoreboard. Several attempts dropped short while many efforts were intercepted by a solid G.C.C. defence inside the 21. Their attacks proved much more eventful and they got three goals in quick succession, including one very good goal by the centre forward after a piercing run. Roco forwards were playing very deep, getting little ball but wasting what they got. The interval came with Rochestown 3-2 to 0-5 down.

A slow start in the second half left St. Francis’ 10 points down. Slowly however they started to get on top at midfield with Nathan Walsh winning and carrying a lot of ball. A great run by wing back James Holland led to him being fouled in the square and Daniel O Flaherty stepped up to convert the spot-kick. He added another goal soon after from play. Roco’s forwards started taking their chances, while the backs did very well to hold the Glanmire attack at bay. In a fantastic display of work rate and skill Sam McGrath hassled and harassed the G.C.C. defenders, not allowing them out with the ball and often winning ball back and turning over the play. The game was back on level terms with 10 minutes remaining when Marnane kicked a super score following another dispossession by McGrath.

Then came a stalemate period when there were no scores in the game for 7 or 8 minutes. Rochestown went a point up but it was quickly cancelled out by a  Glanmire point from the resulting kick-out. Marnane scored again and Rochestown managed to hang on till the final whistle. It was a hard fought win that showed great determination and spirit in a team that had been losing by a 10 point margin.
