This year’s First Year History Tour (Fri 17th May) visited Kilkenny city and county Tipperary. Sights included: St Canice’s cathedral and round tower, Cahir Castle and Knockgraffon Motte.
One hundred first years climbed the 100ft 9th century round tower in Kilkenny city. This was for many the highlight of the day. The panoramic views of the medieval city were “amazing” said a number of students delighted they had braved the steep climb.
Students also laid siege to Cahir Castle that day and Knockgraffon Motte storming their defences. These consisted of steep slopes and high walls, portcullises, slit windows etc.
The tour guides on the day were very informative, adding to students’ historical knowledge and understanding of medieval life.
Many thanks to the teachers who accompanied students on the day: Ms Leen, Ms Henchion, Mr Lucey, and Mr Weldon who organised the trip.
